Underage Driking...

A good friend of my family just quit smoking. We made him to do, mainly because he's now dating my sister.
Anyway, I'm averse to smoking because it's us taxpayer that have to pay when someone is in the hospital due to lung cancer. Unless you smoke a few pipes per week, or a couple cigs a month, and that's all (one full pipe is like one drag on a cig).
Drinking? Depends what you mean. Getting drunk/seriously tipsy regularily? Only acceptable if you have no kids. Like mech mentioned, drunk parents is horrible (not that any of my parents have been drunk...)
If by drinking you mean a couple drinks at a party, nothing serious and no driving, then fine. It can be enjoyable.
BTW Oracle, same law was just passed here.

i think the whole second hand smoke thing is crap. That stuff really is made up to scare the public. Here's some undeniable stuff:

1) Smoking contains a crapload of toxins that kill and stain teeth & fingernails
2) Smoking is chemically addictive, and strengthfully so.
3) It smells really bad.

I personally dont mind an indoor public property smoking ban for the third reason. Yeah, some restaurants have smoking sections, but that's like having a peeing section in a pool, it aint that effective.

And obviously when my heart and lungs hurt 5 seconds after being near cigarette smoke, it's all a fabrication..

Then you have some psychological issues. My friend is not anemic or a hemophiliac, but passes out white from shaving cuts. Second hand smoke is certainly toxic, but as much so as a puff of cigarette. Being around one for 5 minutes straight could make someone nautious, but it's not enough to justify an unprovable claim such as "secondhand smoke kills one person a day". That was my semantic when I said that.

Ok, this is the kind of thing that second hand smoke drives people to:

Quote:CHARLESTON, W.Va. (July 18) - Police found a second rifle and two handguns in the truck of a school maintenance worker accused of shooting a teacher and dousing two other people with gasoline at a county school board meeting.

Several members of the audience at Thursday night's meeting of the Kanawha County Board of Education grabbed the suspect and knocked him to the ground.

Richard Dean ''Rusty'' Bright, 58, of Rand was jailed on charges of malicious wounding and wanton endangerment, both felonies, and faces a July 25 court hearing.

''He told us he was upset because some of the school board employees had been smoking around him,'' Police Chief Jerry Pauley said Friday. ''The school board said they had taken some minor disciplinary action against him.''

Capital High teacher Karen Taylor, 56, was released Friday from Charleston Area Medical Center's General Division after treatment for a gunshot wound to the lower abdomen.

Maintenance supervisor Jeffery A. Allred and personnel official Karen Williams, who were doused with gasoline, were treated at the scene and released, police said.

''That was kind of shocking,'' said school board member John Luoni. ''I immediately began to smell gasoline.''

Bright had been on sick leave when he entered the board meeting shortly after it started. Witnesses said Bright was carrying three large plastic buckets.

After splashing Allred and Williams with the gas and trying without success to ignite it, Bright pulled from his overcoat a rifle wrapped in a black trash bag, police and witnesses said.

Charleston police Lt. R.E. Ingram said Friday the weapon was an AK-47 assault rifle.

Pauley said investigators do not believe the suspect was targeting Taylor when he opened fire. Luoni said audience members grabbed Bright before he could aim the weapon, which fired off several wild rounds before he was subdued.

''Their quick action really did help prevent fatalities,'' Luoni said.

Investigators seized Bright's 1987 Ford pickup truck, found parked outside. A bomb squad searched both it and the school board building for any incendiary devices but found nothing.

Ingram said the truck contained a .30-06 rifle, a .45-caliber pistol with a laser sight and a .38-caliber revolver, as well as ammunition. Investigators were conducting checks on all four weapons, he said.

The school board resumed and completed its meeting Friday morning without incident. Police sent an officer to attend.

''I'm sure everybody was kind of antsy going back after what happened,'' Pauley said.

Pauley said his department will meet with school officials to discuss security at future board meetings.

toonski, studies have proved that second hand smoke kills. It's not psychological. If the stuff the smokers breathe in kills them (that is undisputed) then the stuff they breathe out, which has been in their lungs killing them, and the stuff burning at the end of a cigarette, must surely be toxic and dangerous.

When you say being around smoke could make someone nauseous, that's because they are breathing in poison, aren't they.

Zack: good to see at least two governments have brains on this issue... can you imagine that law being introduced on capitol hill?

Oracle, you're being paranoid. Yes, cigarettes are contain toxins, which, taken in heavier doses are effective as poisen, and because of that, they cause cancer over time and eventually kill their users. studies show that. Studies, most significantly a 1992 study by the epa also shows that prolonged exposure to second hand smoke, such as that of a child who grows up around the smoke of an adult can lead to serious illnesses. However, is nathan smokes a cigarette on the bus and you take a whiff, you will not get lung cancer. You will not get lung cancer if nate is your best buddy and you hang around him while he smokes. Our bodies are designed to withstand certain levels of poisen. This is why they tell parents to smoke outside, but people can live in smog-infested cities and live to 80, or why people can drink a bottle of nicotine and die, but last 30 years inhaling smaller doses before cancer takes them out.

You shouldnt smoke, and no addicted parent should smoke around their children. but you shouldnt go out of your way to fear smokers. If you want to live long, stay off cigs, exercise and eat well, something few people do but everyone acknowledges. Nervously avoiding smoke because you believe it will kill you is paranoia.

Lastly, many states, including florida and new york, have indoor smoking bans in place. it's not as revolutionary as you'd think.

Yes na_th_an smoking on the bus beside me wouldn't give me lung cancer (smoking on the bus is illegal in NZ though), but I would be increasing the risk of me getting it, because I would be breathing in poison.

Hanging around my best buddy while he smokes will increase the risk again, because I am exposed to more smoke. The moral? Less is better, and even a small amount can poison you. This applies to your smog situation, where some people live to 80, because the probability of them getting cancer is raised, but it is not 100%, so they were lucky.

It's all probability, and the fact that it is increased when you inhale smoke, but it doesn't nessecarily mean you'll get it. Just keep away from me when you do smoke, please Smile

Well man, I would never smoke next to you, and I would never smoke in a bus, even if it was legal.

I'm a smoker, not the devil, mind you Wink.
