Ports...
#1
How would i find out the purpose of each port, and what would happen/could possibly happen if I were to open them? Is there a site with a directory listing them?

Ya, that would be some good information... maybe you can find it in the interrupt list, but I don't see why it'd be there...
am an asshole. Get used to it.

There's such a list in Ralph Brown's Interrupt List

Well, the ports to remember are:
Port 80 (the regular www port)
Port 21 (FTP port)
Wait...What's telnet again...I forget. Just Google yourself "list of internet ports."
Opening various ports lets people access data available there. And poses a security risk.
Making your computer a webserver really is just opening your ports, usually 80 and 21, and putting data available there.
