Microsoft is ruthless, but you can be sure most of their code isnt stolen. MS never stole the gui, they attempted very hard to make a gui like os/2, and didnt achieve any success until windows 3.1. that's just common sense. A long time ago, someone had a good idea called the "mircroprocessor" and someone else had the great idea of an "operating system." if someone gets to an idea first, and no one was allowed to make something like it, ideas wouldnt get refined. so i really dont care if microsoft borrows the idea of a bsd stack or whatever if it makes windows better, as that's what i use.

As for longhorn, it's just another MS OS, but the thing that disturbs me about it is this native SQL support thingy. does that mean the hard drive is going to be a huge sql database? yuck.

why is the hd being a database a bad thing? Searching for things would be easier to do, wouldn't it?

Very true, ideas are best developed when more than one person/group is working on it. Microsoft has 'borrowed' code in the past, but the BSD license allowed them to do so, it wasn't illegal, just immoral. Majority of the code however is Microsofts own work, and Windows is a very competent operating system that is still the number one desktop operating system by a longshot (Monolopy arguments aside) and it is still a better choice over Linux/MacOS/Whatever in many regards (such as games, media and support).
