I mentioned this to my son, and he said maybe you could use a PALM computer. He uses one in college that cost less than $80. He says the little screen is a little hard to read, but it works.

If all you want to do is read text files, you can use ANY laptop with a working floppy drive and a screen. (You can grab an old 286 for $10...)
If size is an issue, you're not going to be able to make anything small enough to hide. You might find an ebook-type program for a graphing calculator, or use a cheap palm like moneo said...

This is a good idea, but I don't know if any text reader programs exist for graphing calculators... though one probably does. Is this $80 American? Because that's $160 here... . But it's a good idea, and one that I'm thinking about. Is a Palm just a mini-PC, can you attach a floppy drive and run ordinary .exes?

The $80 is American. My son said that that's what he paid for it originally, but the same model now costs about $40.
