VonGodric: I tried that, and my monitor doesn't turn off anymore. Now it's just the illegal operation thing.

It's not your fault. It's doing it when any program tries to allocate EMS, not just your program. It's my command prompt - EMS is enabled, but something's wrong.

Then I suggest that you should reinstall your windows. Sometimes it helps. Maybe you got some virus or something. Not from me ofcourse!

Yup, I've been considering it for a while. I just might.

I reinstalled win98, but it didn't get rid of registry problems. (some things were missing). The installer just detected that there is a registry already, and didn't bother making a new, clean one. (although it said "creating registry"...)

Dumb Windows does that. "I need to format the hard disk to make clean install" - I learnt that the hard way Sad

Ok Sterling I respect your intelligence too Wink and I'll be nice to you.
Your problem isnt very complicated I think. Just remember what changes you made to your system recently WinXP. Look up 'Windows Restore' may be that will help you. And undo them using System Restore.

Also I would recommend against using WinXP/NT it has completely destroyed DOS. Best would be to use Win95/98/ME or Linux(DosEMU). You could make a dual boot with WinME/XP and RedHat Linux.
:OR:
You could also try downloading VMWare. I think they have one for WinXP too.

Everybody posts here to help others, so you can avoid argueing about misunderstanding. Remember the place is international, and that a lot of people here don't speak english everyday

As for QB7.1, AKA PDS, I tried it a few months ago, and I finally stick to 4.5 with FFix (so that the speed is the same as with 4.0).

I knew that one of the features of PDS is to allow array declarations inside user's types, and that how I guessed Von Godric works with PDS.

The problem with PDS is that some of its features are not downwards compatible with QB40 and QB45 (to include some error handling capacities, and arrays in types). So if you develop a prog with PDS, some other proggers will not be able to use your code.

As for QB4.5, the only real constraint I've heard about is to always leave a CASE ELSE in the end of the Selects, so that old versions of QB can use the prog.

About Windows, double boots and so on: I know there are some trouble with the mouse driver under W2000 or Me (Antoni can tell about that). For XP, the only constraint comes from the path management.

I have set a triple boot on my machine now: XP, Linux Mandrake and a good old plain Dos partition...

I want a plain DOS partition, but how would I manage that if a) I don't have a copy of DOS and b) how do I set it up with LILO?

a) You should be able to get DOS fairly easily with a quick web search. There are also a number of free clones available such as FreeDOS.

b) Same way that you would get LILO to use a Windows partition. AFAIK LILO simply contains the locations of each of the partitions and then jumps to the correct positon and lets the choosen operating system do the rest of the boot strapping. The traditional method of bootstrapping is too simply start executing at the beginning of the harddrive and the OS code sitting there is responsible for doing things such as loading its kernel into memory and such. LILO just allows you specify a location (or several) other than the start of the drive, so it should work with /any/ operating system.
