It ain't the best. Disadvantages:

* Damned payware = lotsa $$$$. (yeah, you can get it from Kazaa and that, but if you wanna sell your software you'll get into trouble).
* HUGE runtimes.
* It takes control over your computer.
* I have to use it al college (ARGH!).

gcc certainly isnt the best. At least it aint better than msvc. it's gotten better over the years, if you can forgive the runtime. A lot of professional, heavy calculating programs are made with it, and they run incredibly fast. Borland's is pretty good as well, and it ranks around MSVC's level.

gcc's latest version claims to have huge speed boosts, but I dont know how to test them. *shrug*

That's a common misconception about MSVC++. EXEs come out huge because you're probably compiling with lots of debugging stuff (which is the default). If you switch it from 'debug' to 'release', the resulting exe will be much smaller and faster.

It could still be inferior to gcc, but not that inferior.

the new msvc .net ide is the best, ide that is. The hiding windows are totally awesome! now be warned, youll want a 1GHZ beast to go with this compiler, but , is that ide nice!
