Qbasic taking too many resources with Xp

I am trying to run qBasic at home with my Windows XP and it's taking a ton of resources and I can't do anything else when running it. I have never seen a software completely mutalate your ram. However it seems to only be a problem with XP. So please someone help me to fix this.
