I thought he meant DOOM.

Odd, maybe you got the Windows 95 version. The DOS version ran smooth on my 486.

About the MOD, the difference is more evident. MIDIs are made of events, such as program change, note start and note end, and the like. MODs are a fixed pattern where you put pitched samples, it is way more limited. You can record a MIDI playing the piano, and it will feature all your expressions. MODs are way more limited in that way. You can only play at a sixteenth rate, whilst in MIDIs the timing is more precise and you can escape from that scheme.

That's 'cause MIDIs are designed to work with synthesizers and other hardware equipment. You can build your system using several synthesizers, effect boxes and drum machines, and use a sequencer to control everything through MIDI. Of course you can use MID files, which are a set of sequenced MIDI commands in your computer, but it will be played by your soundcard synthesizer which used to be a FM generator and now is wavetable-based, so it is way too limited in this scenario.
