"Hosting" a domain yourself...

Is there any way? I mean, how do the domain "companies" manage to get domains anyway?

I'm not sure of the actual process, but for domains supported by ICANN, you have to be accredited by them and own DNS servers, among other details. At least that's what I've been told. Smile

I believe that there's a company called InterNIC that hands out domains...although I'm not positive.
But anyway, no, there's no way to do what you want Rockuman...but if all it is is that you don't want to pay for a domain...well, they're pretty cheap.
For...I think $8 or $9 USD you can get a .net, .org, .com...try http://godaddy.com, it's where I registered thegeekery.org.

ICANN (Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers) pretty much dictates the rules when it comes to the common TLD's. InterNIC is licensed to ICANN, although I'm not 100% sure what role they play...that might be it though. Where's LooseCaboose when you need him, he always knows this kind of stuff Big Grin

Okay, it was ICANN...but wait...you run a webhosting biz, Nek...Do you offer domain registration too? If so...How do you go about registering the domains?

I resell domains for another company. I don't have any control over them outside of that.

Oh, gotcha...
And btw I asked my tech support what their servers are, they said that they have 2.5 GB of RAM and 2.8 GHZ processors...Is that good?

That would depend of how many of them they have...

If you want to host it on your own computer its best to signup with a place like http://www.zoneedit.com/ which offer free dns services. Then you simply register your domain at a place like http://www.godaddy.com or http://www.gandi.net and you give the dns info that you got when you signed up at the dns place. You set the place such as your ip address at zoneeditor or similar. You can host your own dns, but you need 2 servers minimum on seperate ips, but you can host the dns yourself if you host it on the same computer as your hosting as if one is down so is the other. Places like gandi offer secondary dns service.
