...A (msdos preferably) 256-color .bmp-saving drawing program. Just simple commands, like box, fill, freehand, line, etc.
Can anyone recommend a good free one?

Something small and free that handles 256 colour BMPs? JASC's PSP 3.11 for Windows 3. It's free and I think they still offer it on their website. It's not MS-DOS obviously, but I used to use it a whole lot because it's excellent for pixel-perfect work

Deluxe Paint IIe works nicely. You can get a
ModeX patch for it too.
GrafX 2 is another good program. You can get the beta
here and the
alpha here. (The beta seems to crash under XP, but the alpha runs ok.)

We posted at the same time - my post was in return to Nek's post.
Thanks, Plasma.

Well, Delux Paint worked great.
But you can't save as .bmp.
GrafX isn't really what I wanted...And I'll wait for Nek to upload a copy of that Jasc proggie to his site. Nek?
Basically I'm looking for...PixelPlus, except with an option to save as bitmap.

I shall check it out.
BTW now I figured out how GrafX works, I think we may have a winner...but I'll try Jasc's one.
