I am weary of any research. But heres what my brain told me to tell you guys:

Weight of sumo wrestlers is due to fat (major contributer)

1. Excess fat and improper height to weight ratio means heart conditions like atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis.

2. Sleeping disorders(Sleep Apnea) due to excess pressure on lungs/heart.

3. Long term effects like Arthritis - Osteoarthritis & Rheumatoid Arthritis

4. Can lead to increase in risk of Cancer

5. Impaired Immune Response

6. Impaired Respiratory Function

7. Liver Disease

8. Stroke

9. Low Back Pain

Now should I just give up these facts and believe that Sumo wrestlers are immune to all this inspite of their obesity?

how are you determining the obesity tho? With BMI? Cuz if you are using BMI, that's horribly inaccurate, else most heavy weight athletes would be morbidly obese. Granted, they will suffer some problems, but they eat extremely heathly and exercise vigorously, prolly more so than their american counterparts. Saturated fat and hardening of the arteries is what causes strokes and heart related problems, not just being "Fat". If they keep their healthy lifestyle and only lose the fat after they retire, they will have more life expectancy than if they just let their health get shot to hell.

You should read on the matter, like Rhia said. Then you'll give it up:

Quote:The April 1993 edition of _Look Japan_ (which may be a
government publication; I picked it up at the Japanese
Embassy, at any rate) contained the following article,
excerpted below:

Department: Sports and Science: Sumo Wrestlers and Health

Title: Fat or Fiction

Leader: Sumo wrestlers look fat. Really fat. A new
study questions the pervasive notion that their size makes
them unhealthy.

By: Takashi Fuke

... "Surprisingly, sumo wrestlers are not as unhealthy as they
look. I did a study comparing blood samples from some of
Japan's rising sumo stars with those of regular people.
Seventeen wrestlers between the ages of 16 and 26
participated in the study. The averaged 180cm in height,
128kg in weight, and ranked between the makushita and
jonidan levels... The control group was ;18 healthy but
sedentary men aged 20 to 35. In the tests, I compared 17
different aspects of the subjects' blood samples with
interesting results.

"True, most of the indicators for the rikishi were below
those of the control group--though not as far below as one
might expect--but two important indicators of obesity
showed that the rikishi are exceptionally healthy, if fat.

"Levels of uric acid and glucose usually increase when the
body puts on weight. For both substances, the rikishi
tested only slightly higher than the control group,
averaging 93.9 milligrams per deciliter of glucose and
7.32 milligrams per deciliter of uric acid, as compared to
91.3mg/dcl and 6.1mg/dcl respectively for the control
group. Not only were those values lower than expected,
they are well within the normal range, which means that,
in spite of appearances, sumo wrestlers are, from a
medical standpoint, quite healthy.

"... Simply put, rikishi in training get a whole lot more
exercise than the normal obese person.

"... Obese people usually show a high ratio of fat to body
weight, but such is not the case for sumo wrestlers: most
of what appears to be fat on the outside is actually
muscle.

"... The wrestlers who last a long time and make it to the
sports highest levels all display high percentages of
muscle and very good body flexibility. The dohyo-iri, the
ring-entering ceremony in which the wrestlers lift their
legs high into the air and then back down to the ring with
a thud, is a good indicator of just how flexible the
wrestlers are... ..."

The author is associate professor of medicine at the Japan
Women's College of Physical Education, and president of the
Institute of Human Sciences., and is also a doctor for New
Japan Wrestling. His publications include _Ningen Dokku
ga Byoki wo Tsukuru_.

Assuming that since when you get fat (an extremely, extremely general situation) in your culture, you're unhealth, that everyone in every culture will get unhealthy from it is a bit arrogant.
