I am fed up with one liners...
#11
Quote:Weird, Im getting annoyed with that too. Just this morning I was trying to figure out how to use the search feature to find all posts containing only a smilie so I could get a count on them. Perhaps Oracle knows how to do this.

It's not possible, unless there's no bbcode unfortunately Sad

Quote:I've noticed a lot of it recently, and some topics are also getting wildly off topic...

This is sort of expected. Occasioanlly the topic of a thread swings in a different direction because of someones comment. Even though the new direction is off topic it is often an interesting topic (for example the dadsherms computer science thread which turned into a discussion on parsers, my fault sorry). If a new topic is started it makes it more difficult to quote people.[/quote]

That sort of off-topicness is fine. I'm talking about what na_th decscribes here:

Quote:I've seen threads where someone asked, someone replied and that was done, and then someone else posted an one liner and began a one liners battle that lasted three pages.

Quote:Strenghten the forum rules? I don't see that's a solution, 'cause I always said that represion causes rebelty and "upsetness". All we need is a call. And some action. Please ignore one liners, don't reply to them. When people are not attended they get bored, that's a fact. If one liners feel that they are annoying... well, that could prevent them from keeping posting unsenseless scum.

Nobody is changing rules, just changing thresholds at which they get annoyed enough to enforce some of them Wink. You've said you're fed up - so I'm trashing useless one-liners from now on, cos I'm also getting fed up. As an admin I feel I have to read as much of the forum as possible, so I get annoyed also when I see rubbish...

Quote:Anyway, I just wanted to stick in my one liner that I agree...Although what if you simply have to say "But I'm not sure I understand...you have to AND bit 4 with the resulting INP bit?"
That's a one liner, and the only way you could make it longer is by putting a bunch of smilies and stupid comments.

That's a fine one-liner. It askes a relevant question to the topic. I'm talking about posts that don't contribute anything Wink

Quote:I have a small idea too help out with the one liner spamers. If someone does that they get a warning the first time (there could be exceptions though, if there just saying stuff right to the point...). Second time maybe is a tempory supension of the account. Third is banning the person.

We've got a 3-strike system here anyway, and span is considered a warning, however I feel it's probably waaaay too harsh to give warnings out for just one rubbish post... that doesn't mean I'm not going to if someone is acting the fool all the time.

We all know who the people are that na_th is talking about. If I see too many more posts like this:

Quote::rotfl:

or

Quote:So?

I'm gonna start getting harder on my interpretation of the forum rules. From now on, I'm going to delete those posts wherever I see them also.

[edit]You're correct, Zack. But it was a one liner, and would provoke argument[/edit]

But it makes the forum fun; *)

But na_th doesn't think so, and nor do I Wink

Sorry this is going to be a one liner...
How bout we try to keep that stuff to a minimue, and just do it when appropite.

Okay. Just don't impose any mod on phpBB that disallows anything less than, like, 10 words, because that wouldn't be fair. As pointed out, there are many fine one-liners.

Quote:... specially stupid ones with "how do you know?", "me?", "how do you calculated it?", "does it rain in there?" or "".

I am really fed up. It is enervating to get here and find 40 new posts, 30 of them being stupid one liners that just make me lose my time.

lol...nate...I never read this thread but did tonight...have you checked for gray hair lately?? You're sounding older than I!!!

Cheers....

I don't think so. If you read my posts all over the forum you'll notice that I love having fun and making jokes. I can stand almost everything. If you recall, some time ago someone told me "shemale" and what I did was laughing in his face. I always thought that things like double posting when needed were OK and the like. But this is getting out of our hands. And I am not the only one who thinks this way, there are more people as you may find if you read this thread. Posting stupid things is OK sometimes, but some people are doing this in a *very* regular basis. When 90% of someone's posts are spam it really says little of that person. For example, if someone asks something and you reply "I don't know"... well, I think that's stupid. If you don't know, you don't have to post telling so.

You know, when I am on the computer at work or studying I always have an open browser to take care of forums. I usually find very interesting to help, be helped, and discuss many topics, so I usually scan the whole forum for new posts. When I find 20 new posts and then realize that they are 20 senseless one liners... well, that pisses me off. It's really sad that the work of many knowledgeable people is blured among stupid shyte that isn't worth a damned dime.

Anyhow, this is just a matter of opinion. I just expresed my opinion. If doing so I look "old" or something like that, I don't give a fvck1n' damn. If a forum begins boring me, it is very likely that I end leaving the forum.

Na_th_an I agree with you 100% on this issue so far.

I think what needs to be done here is for myself and the other admins to watch closely to the people who post these crap one liner posts in some pointless endeavour to increase their post count of something (I can only assume that is what it is for... and if that is the case that is pretty damn sad) or perhaps they believe a forum is some sort of substitute for an Instant Messenger (e.g. MSN)... well it's not. If you would like to spit one liners back and forth then you should get on MSN and have at it. But, the people have spoken here and they don't want to read the one liners. So we are going to watch and warn the "repeat offenders." I think at this point everyone will start out on a fresh slate and we will just see what happens from here.

Rest assured the matter will be taken care of. Smile

When I read usenet I use slrn's (a newsreader) handy kill file feature. I can mark posters that I know are just spammers and never have to read anything by them, the kill file system is quite complex and allows you to block posters for things like cross-posting to certain groups or posts containing certain words. Forums like slashdot have the karma/modding system so that readers can set their browsing threshold and not have to read the garbage.

Im not saying that we need something like that here, but some of us don't spend every waking hour on this forum and want to be able to read through to see if there is anything interesting quite quickly. It is annoying to read threads that are full of people quoting several lines of someone else and then adding a smilie, or scrolling through a page and a half of virtual gun battles (these really get on my nerves) to find out if anything useful has been posted.

The people that are responsible for this kind of posting know who they are, you don't need to reply to every single thread on this board. I also enjoy most of the jokes here (that Panda on the go-kart was hilarious), but the stuff that na_th_an is complaining about doesn't belong here. Keep it to the PM or MSN or whatever.

How is it going with the chat frame? It might be able to partially stop this?
->You laugh at jokes there instead of taking extra time to make a
whole new post of it...?
