is there a good easy-to-use 3d editor which saves the files in easy-readable format (like Alias WaveFront) and produces low polygon models. animation cabapility is a plus.
i'm thinking about a new fps which uses the mux raycaster + polygon-based objects...

Well, I'm not much into this, but all the people that I know that do level design and character modelling in 3D use 3DStudio MAX and they say that they won't use anything else.

It's excellent but it produces too complex models for a qb game...
...currently trying anim8or

I think there is something to simplify the meshes, removing polygons.

I use Lightwave 7. It's kinda expensive, but worth it. You can buy a used program on their site.

It's awesome! I tried 3DSMAX and LIGHTWAVE on my friend's PC. To me, there was no competition, Lightwave rules, I bought it.
It's easy to keep things simple in Lightwave because you start out with simple objects, and make them more complex
if you want to.

I use softimage XSI because that's what I'm being taught at uni. XSI can be very annoying but capcom uses it so it must be quite good.
Have you tried blender. It's free.
I haven't actually used it myself but it's worth a download since is free.

the anim8or rules. it can be a bit too powerful for a qb game (too complex polygons, and the models it produce require a z buffer), but it is perfectly suitable for my OpenGL purposes. and it can produce "cell shaded" toon models
and the file format it produces is rather easy to read and convert it to my own 3df object description format version 2 (openGL version, not the qb version. they are very similar, but the opengl version has more material definitions and it can handle a more complex models.)

the 3df object description format version 3 is under design. it is similar to the version 2, except it can handle keyframe animation and multiple frames under a one object. just to mention...
