My favorite band would have to be Blue Oyster Cult, but my favorite era of music was the metal of the 90s. My favorite song is "The Vigil", from BOC's 1979 album "Mirrors". And I forget who does this song, but my second favorite song of all time is called "Slow Chemical"...it's fairly recent (last few years), and it's the theme music of Kane (you WWE fans know who I mean).
I'd knock on wood, but my desk is particle board.

Can't believe you left Stone Temple Pilots off that list, considering other bands.

Sorry for dredging up an ancient post, but I just _had_ to say that the proper spelling is Blue Ãyster Cult (notice the umlaut).
No big deal tho; BÃC is also one of my favorites. I could reiterate most of the other 70's/early 80's bands listed here, but that would be slightly useless; those too are my normal listening material.
I personally love causing my head to explode by listening to Frank Zappa (and his sons) - exposing the ways of 60's and 70's psychadelic musicians and more 8). His albums are very confusing, but also really cool, and sometimes you get a fleeting moment of musical awesomeness. But then it just goes away... oh well. Zappa forever!
