I am truly confused at this point...
#1
Okay...
Recently I set my sights on getting a mandolin.
I knew they were fairly pricy, a 'cheap' mandolin being much more expensive than a 'cheap' guitar.
I knew there were two basic types; flat bottom and round bottom.
I'd heard the round bottom ones had a bit of a fuller, richer sound, but apparently (according to cha0s) they're a bit harder to keep from falling when you're playing them-- They tend to slide around a bit. (but that's cha0s's opinion, so... Wink)
Anyhow.
To the point.
My preference was a round back one, due to what I'd heard about their sound, and the fact that they just look so damned cool. :bounce:
I knew I COULD get one fairly cheap, but the amount of hassle would be... Great... And plus, I had no idea of its condition.
I had played a mandolin before; not much, but I had strummed out a few tunes on one at my friend's house.
I wanted to learn to play one better, so I decided to find one...
And then this whole thing started.
Round back or flat back?
4 string or 6 string?
'traditional' or japanese?
And WHY WOULD IT MATTER what the thing was made out of?
The prices vary SO much on all these factors...
They can come pretty cheap, but I want to buy one that'll last a decent amount of time.
I tried looking up mandolins to see if I could find some clue as to what determines what, but hardly any luck.
Is there anyone here who knows what they're talking about when it comes to mandolins, and if so, have any suggestions to get me out of this... Confusion... Thingy?
