text based graphics.

I was wondering how you put text graphics into your game, and have certain types do different things, like some are normal (roads, plains...) some can't be moved through (walls, water, lava...) and I was wondering if someone could post an example (I learn better through examples).

Thanks! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

To help you answer your question (and to even inspire you in the process, too!), here is a link that will lead you to the kind of text games you are perhaps looking for:

There, it will lead you to an absolutely worthy tribute to such very AWESOME-quality text games as ANSi Dude, Insanity, Islands of Danger (my favorite text-game from my early “386-based computer” years!! Wink ! ), a text version of Missile Command ( :o ), and of course, the great ZZT!!

For 2D vertically-scrolling text-based shooting games, please try VAX-11, an amazingly hot Japanese freeware offering for Windows 9x and up from none other than Hello World Project. It is available as an inspiration file for my QuickBASIC Caliber Programming Compo 2004/2005, so click right here to visit it, and while you are there, man, if you check out Original Category #1 of my compo (where I currently hold a *very* special QB “text-mode”-only challenge!), you are sure to find the gem for ‘ya indeed!! ^_- !!

Thanks a lot for your excellent question, man, and I *deeply* welcome you to the QBasicNews.com forumboard. Enjoy your stay! Big Grin !

If you don't want to struggle over the internals of a textmode engine, you could try out MegaZeux.

It handles most of the work for you with support for the keyboard, mouse, sounds, etc. The only thing it won't do is generate an executable. However it makes up for it by allowing you to modify the ascii characters and enter a couple of bizarre modes that apparently are part of EGA.

The currently developer is also porting the code from the old 16-bit Borland C++ to the 32-bit GCC.

Relsoft: That doesn't actually work for me. WinXP hates it.
