Linux is an open source free Operating System. You can download it from the internet. It's better than windows by all means. It is developed by a thousand people all over the world. Its source code is open source (GNU-GPL licenses) so you can browse it and make something new or make some feature better. It is based in Unix (almost every big server runs in Unix).

The bad news is that it still is an OS for advanced people who know a lot about computers, so newbies will get lost in a while. On the good side, it never crashes, you have complete control over your computer (not like windows which doesn't let you do anything) and it runs on very modest systems. That's how we have a server in our flat running in a 486, connected to a 300Kbps cable ISP and providing internet to our little four computers LAN.

I say that Linux is the future *in PCs*. Macs rocks, but they are so expensive. I can't afford a Mac, not only for its implicit price, but their for the price of their ampliations, software and hardware. PCs are the cheap sollution, and the one which fits for me by the moment. In a near future, when M$ takes over the world, free people will still be out of "Big Brother's" sight using fast and safe Linux on their computers.

Also, Linux features nifty apps like Dos Emu, which runs DOS software better than WinME, WinNT, Win2K or WinXP, and also it has a shell which run Win16 and Win32 (most of them) applications, so QB will live forever in a Linux computer. If we stick to windows, QB will die in less than two or three years, 'cause DOS doesn't work properly on a modern computer with WinXP.

Imagine that you make a game in QB. Fine, you have Win9X and it runs fine, so you put it on the internet for more people to download it. But people have WinXP and can't run your game. Will be QB games only playable by QB coders? It would be a pitty. I've recently learned about the Amish... QB comunity will look a lot like the Amish culture if we stick to Windows.

I would have to disagree about Ie and netscape. I think they are both bad but that IE is the lesser of two evils. My favorite browser is Konqueror. And yes IE and outlook are on mac as well as ms office.

I dunno about download linux but you can download FreeBSD at http://www.freebsd.org . About IE I just like the ui more, just my opinion. Also FreeBSD will run on a 386 with 5mb of ram. To install it however you need maybe 16 mb

There are a load of different linux distros(a distro just being basic linux plus different software and ways of installing). I don't have any links on hand but a quick search will bring up a load of download sites. There are linux distros that can fit on a single 1.4 meg or two or a full Mandrake 8.0 installation can be a few cds(I downloaded the 2cd version which installed quicker and easier than windows does, just there are a lot of minor differences that add up quickly).

Here do this: download mozilla, and then download the ie skin. Youll never notice the difference except that your new version of "ie" is much more stable and supports tab surfing(oh yeah).

and on the windows is crap discussion, then dont use it. stop complaining and delete windows right now. See i didnt think you would Smile Im postive that 90% of people who keep saying how windows sucks wont do that. windows simply offers so much(all the games utilities, etc), is fairly easy to code for and is a decent os. sure some of the other os's are better in features and stabliliy, but not one os can match windows's software line.

and on my computer windows is fairly stable if a bit slow. and ive heard win2k is VERY stable too.

actually if i had my way i'd triple boot my system: win2k or xp for .net coding, windows 98 for dos, and linux just to see what its like.
but with a 6GB harddrive, thats hardly a good idea.
