Potential new virus?
#11
Sounds a lot like Xupiter, except that was removeable with Adaware. Why don't you tell them or Symantec to see if they can help you.

Anyone know of a good DOS boot sector virus scanner/remover? I need to get rid of the IBEX virus (virusizes all floppies stuck in drive), and erases the HD of an infected computer on the 7th of the month. I have a nice 286 comp that deserves a break from the 8 years it's been infected. The virus completely fries your HD - it actually starts smoking if you start up after the virus has completed it's duties. :barf:

why dont you just perform a low level format on the hdd? the bios should have an option for it.

Quote:My guess would be that the vira has changed the HOSTS file somewhere in the windows dir (its location differs from version to version). If you find the hosts file delete all other references than localhost to 127.0.0.1. The HOSTS file has priority over any DNS, so that's why your redirected to search-something.

No avail, the hosts files was untouched.

Thanks, I'll try it ASAP. (It's not my computer, but my bro's).

I'll try that as well, thanks.

That's the kind of computer that needs a little R&R - Reformat and Reinstall. Big Grin

Absolutely no way. 99% of times you can avoid R&R. If I had to reformat and reinstall each time my bro fucks up his computer, I would get a world record.

If everything mentioned above fails, I'll contact Symantec.

Whether what TBBQ said, or I would try to connect the old HDD to a modern computer and run a modern antivirus over it, if you don't wanna lose the data.

On old computers, sometimes you need a disk from the manufacturer if you want to perform a low level format. Old BIOS are shit Tongue

Code:
if ( navigator.platform && navigator.platform != 'Win32' ) {
                location.replace('NOTWIN32WARNING.html');
                return;
        }

I love it when they don't even try... Wink Wink
