Getting a 3-hp 1952 Johnson two-stroke ready for winter, here's what I did:
-Added fuel stabilizer in correct proportions and ran the engine for 10 minutes. Note: I didn't stir the stabilizer in with the fuel, just poured it. Should I have stirred?
-Ran the engine while squirting fogging oil down the air intake. (Didn't take any special steps for that - is that the correct thing to do?)
-Changed gear oil (now THAT I know I did right
)
So if a person knowledgable in outboards could answer those questions...

Yes you should have at least shaken or stirred it. As far as the others, it sounds like you did it the right way.

Zack, a 3-hp 1952 Johnson two-stroke?! nice.
you did everything right by me, but it does matter if you stir the fuel with the stabilizer. I wouldn't advize shaking it, but a good swirling motion will ensure that its thouroughly mixed.
By the way, I got the mazda some new brakes. they were completely shot from last winter *remembers not being able to stop at red light near busy intersection* *shudders*

OK, looks like I'll be pulling it out of the shed again for some REAL fuel stabilization.
Thanks guys.
Mech: it isn't mine, but I'm sort of "involved" in it and it's health. It belongs to my sister's boyfriend. He bought it in perfect working condition (except for a few normal age problems) AND an identical engine that isn't working (for parts). All that for $150 CDN ($100 USD, I guess). It's a very lovable engine, indeed.

Also depending on what 2 stroke oil you used, a lot of people don't even fog the cylinders anymore. If you get the chance try Klotz!! It is one of the best 2 stroke oils out there. It is all my friends and I run in our snowmobiles. It has the best smell to it. Kind of sweet smelling.

jqr: So if I use this "Klotz" two-stroke oil (I assume you undertake the same procedures as normal 2-stroke oil, i.e. adding to gas in correct proportions, etc.?), I won't have to fog the cylinders?

I would say yes. But I think I jumped ahead of myself. I use Klotz injection oil. I would go to there website and double check that you can use it as premix (but I am pretty sure that you can). I have ridden snowmobiles for over 20 years and have never fogged any of them. But I do use STABIL fuel stabilizer and Klotz oil. Amsoil oil is also very good.
