Platform preference question
#1
I have reworked from scratch a new platform game I was working on and am at a critical point. I can move the character around thescreen and jump to different 'map' sections when he walks off the side, or scroll the entire map as he moves.

The third option is to only scroll the screen when near the edgemeaning I would have to do both and use that much more limited memory.

I am using rel's superput so blockiness or flickering is not really an issue. (at least not on this win98 amd k6 500)

I am leaning towards flipping to a different 'room' when leaving the edge fo the screen as it will probably be easiest, I just would appreciate some input a$
if a$ <> "" then print "thanks"

Use whatever works best. I tend to like those games which move the map as the player moves.

I remember an old platform, originally for Amiga but also ported on the Pc. Titus the Fox : To marrakech and back.
Well, it had both type of scrolling. You moved the fox around and when it was near the edge of the screen, the backgoround scrolled quickly and centered the fox on the screen.
The main problem was that often you died because you was near the border of the screen, the backrogund scrolled, and you bumped into an enemy that was two pixel far, but unseen until then.

Still, it was a great game (16 colors ega graphics... i told you it's ooooold)

So, i think that moving the bg keeping the main character always centered, is the best choice. (IMO)
