make sure it's a gif and not a file renamed with a gif extension
and make sure it's not animated (that's NOT gif87a)
there's couple different types of GIF Files.

You need different kinds of loading routines in order to load different GIF files. Which GIF file did you try to load and which routine did you try it with?

The image is probably in GIF89a format. Easiest solution, load it into an art prog and resave it as a GIF87a.
