8-bit colour, raycasting light mapper -- want a tutorial?
#1
I worked out a system a few days ago which uses raycasting, blender maps, and a low resolution bitmap to create a fairly convincing lightmap system for low resolutions at 256 colours. Here's my proof-of-concept (controls w,a,s,d, space quits, k moves the light source).

Has anyone done this in QB before? Did it work out well? Would anyone be interested in a tutorial about how to do it?

Hmm? I don't quite understand what your getting at... all i see is tv-like static, your light source which moves with k and a blue square box that can be controlled. I don't quite understand it.

Move the blue box closer to the light source. Block it.

The TV static is just colour information. I used it because it's fast. As I said, it's a proof-of-concept.

Nice, but really really slow...

If you'd like, I could run your tutorial in QB Express. Let me know if you're interested.

I'm actually planning on firing off another issue of qbxl next week, barring any wierd events.

The hordes of fans will be after my blood if I don't. Smile

Hordes of fans?

*snicker*

why not just have one qbzine instead of >1?

Because every zine has its own style. Its better for the community when having more than one zine/mag, as one will never suit everyones taste.

This isnt too realistic though, I mean it should either be cut straight up and down, or not show at all. Apart from that, not bad, apart from the ugly speed.

The demo is pure QB, so I'm sure that's part of the issue.

Also, it might seem slower than it really is because I'm just using inkey$.

Edit: and Barok, the reason I don't just start submitting to other QB mags is I don't like the dryness and seriousness of almost any given QB magazine. That's the reason why I started QBXL.
