I think it might be a good idea to have unified formats in libraries, where its possible. But I don't want anyone to decide what format I use for my own stuff. Besides, you learn a great deal from planning and making up your own file formats.

Of course it is a very good challenge to create a new file format. But it is a very annoying thing when someone finds out that he / she just created a file format but she / he is unable to transport images to it for example because of working with some RGBA stuff, or 3D to where there is not any common file format what can be used effectively. So then he / she needs to create everything on his own, or spend ages on decoding some convertors, or on understanding some complex format like PNG. To avoid this it would be good to define some simpler formats with wich we make some editors compatible, so who needs a certain thing would only need to code the appropriate format in his editor, and then she / he can transport the data effectively and easily.
