V Planet! has moved to its new server
#11
The fact that so few nominations were received was proof enough that not a lot of people gave much of a rat about it, and that was quite sad, really, considering that the GGA was once a landmark of QB gaming achievment. To win an award in the GGA meant you were the best of the best. The Qmunity lost its competitive spirit long ago, and when one believes themselves to be a contender, they immediately get labelled as egotistical. There's something to be said about being proud of your own work, and much of the Qmunity drowned that out and took that pride from a great deal of people. Why? I don't know...perhaps fear of competition from other communities who seem to wield more power than us, or a fear of one's own self-lacking. To not even be nominated in the GGA used to make one feel as if they were not worthy, as if they didn't "fit in" with QB's elite. Quite frankly, I miss the competitive days of the Qmunity, when we had rival factions everywhere and someone was always pushing the envelope to try to outdo someone else. That was competition and it was healthy. Sure some egos got bruised and battered, but instead of being pigeonholed, the defeated came back for more with something new and the cycle continued. That's all been lost now. Cry

Ah well...

Maybe once FreeBasic gets nice and rock-solid, the "games" age will show up again. I only joined the community around the same time it ended.

Well, when the site is active on the new server (it's being transferred right now), I'll reinstate the last nomination script as it was before and we'll finish this GGA up the way it should be. Whether people care or not, I've got a duty to perform to V Planet's legacy and to the Qmunity in general, so I'm going to fulfill that duty.

Nek, what's the status with the Discussion Board? It looks to me like all you've got to do is CHMOD that script...

Did you lose the database in your server crash or something? Even if you don't have the old posts, you should make the board functionable again.

perl stopped working on the old server. It works on the new one just fine, so when the site is transferred tonight, everything should be back to normal. In any event, I'm developing a new forum script for the new V Planet that's similar to the old one but more efficient and feature-rich (registered members, which means post editing among other things, plus adding all the goodies like img tags). Also, that forum uses textfiles, so there's no database to lose. Big Grin Of course, the textfile method is horrible :barf: but it was what was in use at the time.

I think that now that less and less QB quality games are being released (we are in one of those periods of time when the "best QBers" don't produce a shit or are gone - you know this pattern repeats from time to time, until newbies evolve to masters), and FB is knocking the door furiously (If Allegro is gonna be released expect a new game by yours truly every week Big Grin), I'd think it is time to do a Retrospective Gaming Gold Awards.

I think that people are not interested on GGA 'cause there aren't many good games to vote. There are good games, but just a few. I mean that it's not like in 2001, for example, when 20 or 30 games (I mean TOP quality games) were "fighting". But maybe people would get a bit more interested if you did a RGGA to give prizes to the best QB games of all time.

Of course new QB games will be popping from time to time, but I think that most games in the future will be compiled with fB, so now that you are gonna drive VPlanet to the fB realm, it would be fine to do this RGGA as a nice farewell.

Btw, Jan 27th... The TAC is ending Smile do you have entries so far?

*applauds* Big Grin

You're certainly right about the competition aspect too. I loved these events and really looked forward to 'em.. and seeing the cool stuff other people came up with really inspired me. But nowadays, well.. people like syn9 release a jaw-dropping demo that would have been raved about for months and it gets a few "kool!" responses and pretty much disappears.

Its the end of an era Sad
