The arguement I see here from my standpoint (sitpoint?) is that 15 years ago Linux was nothing more than a hobby OS. What if this guy develops a working OS now? Perhaps it won't be used, but maybe in 5 years time it will pay off and people will find some use for it?
Another point worth mentioning is that OS development and popularity don't happen overnight. They take years. Encourage the guy. Help him out.
