Where do I download QBasic and which version ?
#1
I programmed in QBasic about 10 years ago but since then I had no contact with it. I want to download latest QBasic version to try programming again. Where can I download version that will work on my Windows XP, and are there any good e-books about QBasic programming ? Thanks

Do you want Qbasic (interpreter) or QB (compiler)?

Any version will work in Windows XP. I suggest you to search for VBDOS. I had it on my site, but it is temporally down.

You can get QB 4.5 (the most used version) at http://www.qbnz.com among other places.

As for ebooks, you can get Ethan Winner's using a simple google search.

Na_th_an says,

, and he is right. However, I, personally, have not been able to get any QuickBASIC 4.5 program that uses the SCREEN command and the graphics commands to run properly. I always get a full screen for a few seconds, then the QuickBASIC window is minimized.

In all fairness, Na_th_an has tried to help me, more than once, but, not being sufficiently proficient in the art, I have failed to conquer my problems in this field.

I post the above, not to be negative (even though I am being negative, I suppose), but, rather, so that all may enjoy a true and practical solution. I hope!

the latest and independent version of the Quickbasics it's the 7.1O also named QBX for the executable or PDS (professional development system)

you can download it from
http://www.billymiller.web1000.com/download/qb71.zip
http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~twotowers/s.../pds71.zip

(i dislike qb4.5), QBX also it's built-in in the Visual Basic for Ms-Dos

the standard version (almost 2.5O Mbs) it's here

Note that PDS is not QuickBasic. It is not the same product line. The last version of QB is 4.5.

PDS 7.10 contains the MS Basic compiler 7, called BC7.

Microsoft began the compiler line in the early 80s with MS BASCOM (MS Basic Compiler). It grew up to v. 5 before QuickBasic showed. QuickBasic was basicly a MS Basic Compiler and an IDE. The "Quick" in the name is there 'cause it was "quick" to develop in BASIC being able to compile from within the IDE. While the QuickBasic product line was out, the MS BASCOM product line got discontinued.

The QuickBasic product line got to v.4.5 in 1988. This is the last QB version.

Then MS took the BASCOM product line where they had left it several years ago, developing MS Basic Compiler 6.0 which was shipped as the main part of MS PDS 6.0 .PDS (Professional Developing System) contains more than just a compiler+Ide, it brings professional profiling and debugging utilities.

After PDS 6, PDS 7 and PDS 7.1 were released in 1990 containing MS Basic Compiler 7.0.

Later, VBDOS was released. Some people claim that it is, in fact, the MS Basic Compiler 8.0. The Pro version had all the goodies that PDS had, so many people consider VBDOS Pro to be PDS 8.

I wish I had my old page up Wink

This all was to tell you that if you want the latest version of MS Basic Compiler for MSDOS you should get VBDOS. PDS 7.1 is not the last one.

I had a problem with QB and XP. Any version I tried, 1.1 and 4.5 always checked the floppy when I opened a new/existing file. I couldn't download it directly because it wasn't connected to the net, so don't use a floppy with WXP. It could screw something up.

(It also made it so when I right-clicked on anything it would spin the drive, but a System Restore fixed that right up.
