One thing Ive always wondered....

Why are meta commands written as comments?

Maybe it's for backwards compatibility (so that older/other BASICs can ignore it as a comment).

well, in "lesser" versions, using:
'$include ''
would generate an error. (Qbasic 1.1)
I think they did it, as mentioned above, for pure frustration - something M$ is really good at.
