There's no way just to stick two sheets of foil across a sheet of plastic?

I told you, just wait until next week when I have free time. I'll write tutorials eventually for all this.

I like the cavity/inert gas theory. I wouldn't be too surprised by that.

All bets are off with those "white LEDs" which are just a deep blue to violet LED that has a mix of phosphors like those from regular fluorescent tubes embedded in the molded epoxy case or elsewhere between the LED die and the human eye.

I have a deep blue keychain flashlight that's pretty cool. I was using it as a simple flashlight roaming around in a darkened room one night, and happened to flick the beam across some day-glo colored file folders I have around. Orange, red, green, hot pink sorts of things. While in general everything else looks pretty drab in this blue glow, some white papers and other white materials flare up brightly bluish. Those folders though flared up in their "true" colors, unlike anything else. Scanning around I realized some magazines tend to use day-glo spot coloring for some titles on the front cover (try Maxim ;-)) and it gives an eerie effect like the fluorescent lettering is hovering very slightly above the page itself.

For fun facts on LEDs and related topics, try:
