Simple logic says otherwise =P

3/17 - parade supposed to be here
3/18 - nothing
3/19 - nothing
3/20 - guessed parade date

-Guy can't post while in parade
-guy posted on 3/20
--parade can't be on 3/20

one possible parade date left (3/17)

Urger, don't let the guys kid you. Congratulations for marching in the St. Paddy's Day parade. I wish I had been with you. I marched in it many times playing the drums, when I lived in NY.

By the way, does the parade still go up 5th avenue?

About not being able to post, well maybe you had too much of that green beer.

True, but how about today, March 19th, San Jose (the feast of St. Joseph)? I'm sure that was celebrated in many places in Spain.

I forgot about St. Patrick's day because I had to audition for All-State choir that day and I was really nervous and had to dress "nice" which for me was a nice dress black shirt and khakis with black shoes... which means, no green.

Lea was trying out for All-State band and she had green socks on.... that's it tho.

Nathan, Feliz dia de tu santo, un poco tarde, pero...

I was so caught up with St. Patrick's Day that I forgot that Holy Week starts today. You live in or near Sevilla, no? I hear that Sevilla has the most famous Holy Week celebration in the world; i.e., Semana Santa en Sevilla. Nathan, tell us a little about it from your point of view.

Of course. It's almost the same fashion in all Andalucía, but Sevilla is the biggest.

This is thought to be religious, but it's more folklorical, IMHO. You all might find this very strange, but it's not so Big Grin

Basicly we have processions. Each processions start in a church, do a prefixed tour, and then comes back to the church. They consist on the following:

1.- A long line of people (paired) who port a big candle and have their face covered. They all wear the same clothes and use a conic hat, much in the fashion of those used by the KKK (not to be compared, of course). Those are penitents.

2.- The "paso", which is like a big wooden table profusely adorned (most of them are baroque or baroque-inspired) which carries a scene about the passion of Jesus on top. A scene made of wood sculptures. The whole thing is really heavy, and it's ported by 30 to 50 people beneath the table, called "costaleros", which cames from "costal" which can be translated as "bag" like in bag of potatoes but also as "something heavy to carry" Big Grin

[Image: Paso%20del%20Cristo%20del%20descendimiento.jpg]

"costaleros" are covered (the only thing you can see is their feet), but this is how they "work" (from a "rehearsal"):

To soften the pain and protect the neck (the weight is carried over the shoulders) they use this kind of "hat", with is in fact a bag, called "costal":

3.- As in the past, when the tradition begun, women were not allowed to cover their faces as penitents (you know, for catholics women are sinful), they made their penitence behind the "paso" with their face uncovered. Many women still prefer walking behind the "paso" although they are of course allowed to walk with the "normal" face-covered, candle-carrying penitents.

4.- Some processions bring a band, usually which play horns, metals and drums. Some others (specially those which have to do with the death of Jesus and stuff) prefer to walk silently.

The whole thing looks this way:

http://www.cartagena-virtual.com/semanas...el2002.jpg
http://www.ssantadaimiel.org/Cartel_-_Se...a_2004.jpg

People go out and wait in the streets until the procession comes. They stay in silence while it passes, in respect. Most processions take 7 to 9 hours, so go figure how tired the "costaleros" end Tongue

A bit creepy, but heh - that's folklore Big Grin at least we don't eat children Wink
