I tend to disagree that news broadcasters have a midwestern accent. Maybe on midwestern stations, but not on nationwide stations.

IMHO, after living in California for 11 years, I found no distinguishable accent for Californians living in big cities, and they sound like radio or TV announcers to me. Of course, rural Californians have the same "country-folk" accent as in most rural areas of the USA.
