well C's quicksort didn't beat mine....

Then again I don't know what the hell that code does and haven't since I made it. (I didn't know when I made it either. :lol: )

I also know the arrays I put in there could be made of either the bits of the largest number or the array size, instead of the actual array size..

i read the first 5 posts or so then skimmed through the rest, so i'm not quite too sure about what everyone else is saying... but i found some things on other sorting algos...

okay, you guys got me intrigued by sorting algorithms. might start experimenting with them tomorrow... i spent about 20 minutes and found a few algorithms that are allegedly fast.

yeah, i really shouldve said it before but, aga~ that is an amazing algo, i still havent sat down and really tried to put my head around it

I added the following sort algorithm of yours

to a copy of the SORTDEMO.BAS program. Granted, this is a very simplistic test, but you can get a rough feeling for a sort algorithm's performance against others.

You will be pleased to know that your algorithm, with one exception, was faster than all the other algorithms in the SortDemo including the original QuickSort.

The one exception was Ethan Winer's version of QuickSort, which runs about 15% faster than yours. It's a non recursive QuickSort that accomplishes the same idea by using a stack. Here's his code:

Heap sort, are you nuts. then you gotta go through the painful process of heapifyadd and heapifyremove, not to mention building a BST without objects.
f you play a Microsoft CD backwards you can hear demonic voices. The scary part is that if you play it forwards it installs Windows.

Actually, when I converted your code for the SortDemo, I converted the LONGINT to INTEGER, 'cause it isn't needed for the demo program.

There must be some other subtle difference. In any event, your algorithm is remarkable. Big Grin
