GMail really cranking it out?
#11
If you have a web-based email account set up for ease of access from multiple computer locations, because you don't have a personal pc, or (like myself) have a permanent "free" account that is used as a catch-all for all online correspondence then you know the woes of dealing with a measly 1-2MB of storage space.

The constant cleaning out of emails that take up precious space in your account can be a bit of a headache. Also, when someone innocently send you an attachement or two that completely fills up your email account, you suffer through lost-email-worry syndrome wondering how many bounce-backs occurred before you checked and cleaned the messages out.

With other providers now upping the space per account to 100MB, this happens less often, but GMail's whole idea is NEVER have to permanently delete ANYTHING. You archive and keep all emails so you can always look up old messages.

As the storage climbs, I have been considering forwarding other email accounts to my gmail one just so I don't lose anything.

I used to think this as well, but eventually I got round to asking somebody for a GMail invite to see what it was like. It's better than I ever imagined and I don't think I'll ever want to go back to using 'standard issue' e-mail accounts. Something in particular I like is the GMail notifier, which just runs in the background and notifies you via a subtle slide-up notice when you have mail. Saves having to keep opening the mail program to keep checking. (I know it's very simple to write a program to acheive the same effect, but still).

The spam filter seems to be brilliant as well... I've never had any spam slip through the filter and no messages intended for me have ever been filtered out into the spam folder. I'm not afraid to put my e-mail address on web posts, or to use it to sign up for services any more! Smile

You really should give it a try, if you need an invite, I have plenty. Just ask.

By the way, you can still use a POP3 client to check your GMail if you don't want to use the web interface. Wink

Very well said, ShiftLynx, That is exactly how I would put it.

But I dont know why anyone would want to use a POP3 client when the interface of Gmail is so brilliant. I mean, I had never seen an email system organising emails into threads before. Classic.

Do you mean: "how do I get a GMail account", or "how do I invite other people to use GMail"?

For the first: you have to be invited by somebody who already has a GMail account.

For the second: when you sign up, you have 5 invitations... I think that you get more invitations according to how many people you invite (I have 50 invitations left now, but I've only ever invited one person). If you already have an account, look at the bottom of the left-hand side bar.

Email me, and I can pass along an invite to you. I handed out about 1/4 of the total invites alloted to me and recieved the same number again, so I don't mind.

Oooh! Oooh! I have gmail!

jkreitlow@gmail.com

It ROCKS! (It rocks because of the lack of ads, spam, and the immense amount of space availible, and because it's FREE!)
