Just for clarity, my post was in response to Mitth's last post.
I'm not sure why, but I just had a feeling that GIF was lossy; you're right though... maybe I was thinking of JPEG, which I know is lossy, heh. As soon as I think of GIF I think 256-colour and loss of detail... but yes, the loss of information is just an effect of reducing the bit-depth of the image, not the compression algorithm.
