I need some ideas about the development of my new FB compo.
#1
Dearest all of the QB45/QB71/FB community,

A rather so splendid good week to all of you. Big Grin

Now then, from recent weeks ago, I started to work on my newest FreeBASIC demoscene compo that is planned to be scheduled for this summer. It is in early development right now, but after my Official Entry Rules from my three QuickBASIC Caliber Programming Compos, I can *sure* need your help to help make my next compo a success! :wtnod:

I have just set up a poll as to whether or not you want me to arrange/change the Official Entry Rules since my last compo that has recently been cancelled. Any suggestions having to do with the arranging and/or changing of any of the Official Entry Rules are appreciated, and I may even take some of them into account, too!! Big Grin

See you again with your thoughts, and thank you in advance for your wonderful patronage. :king:

now I voted (1st vote ;-)) however I have no idea where the first set of rules are...it's hard to make a suggestion :-). if you would be so kind to point me in the right direction, I could look at it and see what can / could / should / might change.
hen they say it can't be done, THAT's when they call me ;-).

The first set of rules caused a riot here on QBN. I hope this isn't going to be round 2.

Adigun, I'll give you a tip: the fewer rules in a compo, the better.

One of the reasons why nobody entered your latest QBCPC was because you had so many rules and because it was so complicated. You had tons of different categories for entries, all kinds of stipulations, etc. It was confusing.

If you're gonna organize a successful competition, the rules should be something extremely simple, like this:
Make the best FB graphics demo you can. Submit it by May 31st. We will then have a vote to decide the winner.

That's all you need to make a good competition. Keep it simple!

I am gonna go with you 100% on this one, Pete. You know why? Because, I personally and so strongly believe in the term “Keep it real, keep it simple”, and there is nothing really wrong with that to be perfectly clear, this I know. Big Grin

And you know what I really think about what you said which was.....
Quote:the fewer rules in a compo, the better.
........that just says to me that you have some *truly awesome* advice going here that I WILL take into such wonderful account indeed, you know what I mean? d=Wink=b !

Previously, I had 21+ rules and too many other things indeed, which needlessly complicated and eventually frustrated matters to where almost NO ONE wanted to enter my previous three compos ( Cry ). I can see that pattern now, and I am willing to eradicate that dread-zone in this new compo of mine, so do wish me well on it please!! Big Grin

MOST excellent piece advice of there, Pete, and thanks so much for the delightful encouragement tonight!!! Cool

To all of you (and those of you that replied in this thread):

Look, since I do so seriously care about you guys and the entire QB45/QB71/FB community with all of my rather heart ( Big Grin=b ! ), here now are my all-new Official Entry Rules for my upcoming compo right here. It is not perfect as I had hoped, but I did the best I could, really.

As a person, I have been through quite a helluva lot of struggles and heartache and even some big-time pain trying to change my rules since right near the start of my third QBCPC, BUT, I sure hope myself that the new rules are better than they ever was, while at the same time, I am learning to bring a more proper balance to my new compo, too. Moreover, I will leave it up to you all as to whether you *really* do like them indeed or not. Wink

The title of my new compo, by the way, is called the “FreeBASIC Ultimate Demo Compo”, and I plan on getting it launched to you on the web hopefully before June of 2005. Hang tight, everybody!

See you all later, and all your honesty and comments are most welcome. :king:

WITH MY DEAREST HEART TO YOU,

P.S. I’m *sure* gonna keep my fingers crossed, believe me!! :bounce: !

Well, you certainly did a better job with the rules this time around Adigun. Must have been quite a bit of work to go from the originally posted rules and cut ir down to what we can read in this last post of yours. Excellent job if I do say so myself. :-)

I must ask, how do you define Ultimate FreeBasic Demo? What can it be and what should it be? Reason I ask is I've had to explain it myself for a compo of mine. So I'm assuming some might want to ask you the same question.

Define a demo :-). is it a game, a graphics presentation (no user interactivity), does it matter? :-). Is it whatever program we feel like making that is designed to show off the exquisite features of FreeBasic?
hen they say it can't be done, THAT's when they call me ;-).

To MystikShadows:

Hey, thank you SO richly much, my good man!! d=:king:=b ! I mean, I never for a slightest moment even thought that I could dare pull it off successfully at all, ever, because in my whole and most recent changing of the Official Entry Rules, I cutted down the overall number of rules from 21+ to 13, and then finally to no more than only seven (7)! Quite an improvement if I do say so myself now!!! Big Grin

Also, I can define a demo for you as best I can, so here goes nothing.

Alright. A demo is most usually a showcase of some of the most mind-blowing and even never-before-experienced graphics in which the viewer can truly just kick back and enjoy. If you can think back to three *amazingly* spectactular QB demos — Relsoft’s “Mono and Disco”, Qasir’s “The Final Frontier”, and Plasma’s “Digital Reality” — then you are sure to get my point, MystikShadows. Smile You can find them at the Phat Code site, demos section. Hey, these are the kinds of demos that I am talking about when it comes to my new compo and what it will be all about. Without a doubt. Wink

For instance, if you want to do a graphics demo entry to show off the awesome capabilities of FreeBASIC, you are MOST definitely welcome to do so in my new compo, too!! Cool Nothing wrong with that, really.

Thank you once again, and I hope these answered all of the questions for you now. Be seeing you later!!

Problem with that is we have OpenGL. Now with extensions and vertex shaders, doing a demo in pure sofware would almost be a recipe for defeat.

I mean, with pure sofware, you'd have to make your own rasterizers, would probably take ~>100 lines while with OGL it's just about 4 lines. :*)
