How are Cartoons and Animes *produced*
#11
Well, I never said gif animations would get you anywhere, I mean, it's a good starting point, but I know I can't say, "Hey, I made a gif animation, I'm gonna go start on my movie!". Flash however, I don't think that's a good place to start either. Flash in my opinion is only good for fancy buttons and ads. I see flash cartoons, yet none of them have the quality of *anything* I have seen on TV. Besides some little silly cartoon shorts that may use it. I will try to find some animating software though.

well, dont trust web cartoons. flash does have everything you need (sprite scaling, scrolling backgrounds, and easy-to-access stuff). and gif files arent horrible either (i remember some japanese guy making full-blown sketch cartoons scenes that were just spectacular, smooth 30fps animation). all-in-all, flash, being a full-blown scripting language (xiao xiao anyone?), is probably your best choice of action.

speaking of 30fps, what nathan said about 12-14 fps... that's only for lazy animators (like japanimators Big Grin)... but it's probably something you're going to have to do since maintaining 30fps is a pain in the posterior.

Nooo, even Disney uses less than 30/24 fps in the animation that's not CG or CH like almost all their actual crap. The point is, what you see runs at 30/24, but the actual animation has less frames than that, so when the camera pans or zooms the animation seems fluid, while... I'll insist, watch carefully to get the full idea.

And... only good for buttons and ads? *sheesh* Kids...

Well, yeah... I'm aware of how many drawings and stuff it will take. Making stuff takes effort and devotion.

And what's with all the haters up there. Doesn't anyone think I could do it?

Haters? I only see skeptical people. [Image: biglaugh.gif]

disney uses 15 frames per second on the draft animations, but it is really choppy. if you look by-frame at a movie, the image changes every frame is a lot of scenes.

in just about ever movie since 'oliver and company' they've also drawn characters each frame over cg animations.

megaman, there are no "haters", come now. there's some prozac in the the left shelf of your medicine cabinet. gooood.

use flash. it's your best option. also, try and keep the actual animation minimal. they did a really good job of doing this in old lucasarts scumm games. i still think comics are an easier/better way to test out your art skills because there you can spend time on each drawing and include things like cg and the like. but hey, we're helping you here.

also: do you have any of those hand-drawn animated gifs we could look at?

Haters? Well, Megaman, at least that you are really rich, I don't think you can afford the equipment you need. First of all, you have to buy the photographer machine, the backlit set, loads of film, acetate paper, the paintings, the special pens ... ... ... can you buy them?

If you don't (most likely) how are you supposed to make an anime? could you explain?

Yeah, I guess I'll look into the idea of flash. And I can't find any of those animated gifs I made. As I said, they weren't that good anyway.

well, nate, nobody but don bluth has the spare time and money to buy an animation studio and make movies himself. i think pj here's best shot is to scan some hi-contrast ink drawings. a simple backlight costs about 25 bucks (i invested in one awhile ago for some of my art), but you can improvise with a translucent cutting board propped over a flash light. the general idea is just to get a light shining through the back of the paper so you trace for animations. anyhow, scan them black and white at a high res, color and scale them down for anti-aliasing. that way you dont have to deal with little tiny light-colored dusts and scratches and the like. you're going to need a routine anyhow to push out animations.
