broken partition
#1
hey people. Yet another computer problem... I just got a new computer with a harddrive that's partitioned into a c: and a d:. I figured it was perfect, as then i would be able to repartition half of it to put linux on. I tried with ubuntu, but the installation failed, and now windows fails to see the d:. I tried reformatting the d:, but it failed. Anyone have any suggestions? I wanted to try partition magic, but i can't find it.

what file system do you have on your d: FAT32 or linux native partition?

if it's dos/windows fat32 just createa bootable disk and from that disk use FDISK to recreate your logical drive D.

if it's linux native file system...then other than partition magic, I'm not sure how to change that back to a fat32 partition.
hen they say it can't be done, THAT's when they call me ;-).

under windows you use fdisk, it's actually really easy under windoze. (not xp, for xp you use a diff prog, what ver of windoze you using?)

It's a brand new computer, so therefore it's using windows xp. I'm not sure what the partition is right now... Disk management won't tell me. Both partitions were formatted to be fat32, but i think the ubuntu installation disk reformatted the partition. I'm not sure if it succeeded though...

in that case, control panel -> administrative tools -> computer management -> disk management (it's toward the bottom of the tree thing on the left), you'll see a nice visual representation of all your partitions, windows or otherwise, in the bottom pane, from there you can delete partitions and recreate partitions and all sorts of fun stuff

I had a 120 GB harddrive from Western Digital that did something like that... except it was only one partition.... and I couldn't format it ever, it always failed or Windows "could not read" it or some other dumbness. Well anyways, I don't know what's wrong, but I'm sending mine back :-?
