quickbasic on windows xp
#41
The OEM distribution I have is SP1. I also have the SP2 upgrade on CD. I have no other explanations as to why this occurs. I should add that this is an ACER brand system, so who knows what deal ACER has with Microsoft.

I use my extravagant name because I'm just that cool.. Obey me! Your goddess!

You're all missing a vital lead as to why DOS QB doesent work under Windows XP..
It's fairly obvious..

I'll leave it to you to figure it out..

What does that mean? Could you explain with more detail?

Think of me as a lunkhead, or some such, because it is NOT obvious why a DOS program, such as QuickBASIC 4.5 should run perfectly well in text mode running in WINDOWS, but NOT in graphics mode. Yes, one can say, simply, "Microsoft Windows XP just doesn't support DOS-based programs anymore!", and let it go at that.

But, consider this: why does a DOS-based program, written in DOS-based QuickBASIC, with graphics (SCREEN 12, with graphics commands such as LINE (10,10)0(100,100),1), run fine in uncompiled form and show the line (or circle, or a green field of grass, with a blue sky, and a few objects more, even some movements, indicating that the program IS WORKING in XP), only to freeze at after a few seconds with XP and SP 1. And, why shoud the same program, uncompiled, run identically, but not show anything more than a blank screen for a few seconds, and then minimize after a few seconds? Yes, yes, "Microsoft doesn't support..."

So, with that wonderful explanation, I will drop the subject forever...well, maybe after a few more goes at it, ha, ha.

And, I have solved my personal QuickBASIC problem by rebooting with my DOS 98 disk that I got produced from my Windows 98. I formatted a 3 1/2" disk, then issued the command, SYS A:, which put:
COMMAND.COM,
IO.SYS,
MSDOS.SYS, and
SYS.COM
on the disk, and allows me to run "DOS-based"programs in QuickBASIC, even with the graphics! Just like old times.

My next step is to use Partition Magic to partition my 3 GHz Pentium 4 computer with its 143 GB, 90%-free hard drive into two, one with DOS or Windows 98, the other one with XP. This will make things a little more snappy!

I am telling the QB world that I now can run QuickBASIC 4.5 graphics programs on my computer, running under Windows XP Home Edition, ver 5.1 , with Service Pack 1 or 2!

This was accomplished by unchecking the last 20 check boxes in the Startup tab of MSCONFIG, and leaving checked the first 8 such boxes.

So, as Na_th_an and, I believe, some others mentioned, the problem was never Windows XP, but, rather, other programs that were started automatically on startup, and were running in the background. Which one(s), I don't know, and, unless someone really needs this information, I don't intend to pursue this any further!

Thanks to so many of you who have tried to help me solve my problem by posting ideas to try out.

Half your luck. The startup tab is different for everyone, since I don't even have half that amount of stuff in that tab. I do believe its Windows XP versus an ACER motherboard and USB controls which screws me. But, meh. I switched to FreeBasic.

The bottom line is, "Whatever works for you". And, you have solved your problem by changing over to FB. Seems to me you're doing just fine!
