My demos in Windows XP...
#21
DrV (and, To Whom It May Concern):
Thank you very much, DrV, for your patience and time in looking for a possible cause of my inability to run the two demos I tried.

Regarding Config.nt and Autoexec.nt:
I opened Wordpad, went to C:\windows\system32\ and opened each of the files Config.nt and Autoexec.nt, in turn . Hmm, skipping all the numerous REMs therein contained, I read the exact, same wordings you (DrV) show in your post, above!

So, my Windows XP HE config.nt and autoexec.nt are NOT corrupted nor changed in any way.

Next possibility, please.
Ralph, using QuickBASIC 4.5 and Windows XP Home Edition and Service Pack 2, with HP LaserJet 4L printer.

Hi everyone,

I finally done it, I used the new mouse program from DrV and put it in my new fourth demo accessible below:

http://www.cam.org/~clay/krpg/krpge43a.zip

It works fine with Windows 98SE, let's see now if it works with Windows XP!

Thank you in advance for your precious help...

I'm not sure if there's a difference in the code for the two parts but here's what happened to me:.

I started the programs and the menu selection and where you enter the name worked great mouse was smooth and precise. Once I clicked ok after I entered a name. and the game started, then the mouse didn't seem to want work I would click on places to get it to move to that place and it wouldn't work...suddenly I click the right mouse button on top of the character's head and it moved there and I couldn't get it to move again.

But like I said, the hole menu (restart and such) and the name entry part worked wonderfully.
hen they say it can't be done, THAT's when they call me ;-).

This demo work with both mouse and keyboard. You interact with menus and icons with the mouse but you move the character with the arrows. In mouse mode you right click to swap to keyboard mode and while in keyboard mode you press the spacebar to swap to mouse mode. It may sounds strange but you'll get used to it.

In mouse mode you can click on any icon options (examine, talk or quit) or your name to gain access to more icon options (use item, examine item, use magic, etc).

In battle, you have access to the flee icon option and you always click on your name to gain access to more icon options (attack, use item, use magic, etc).

Ahhh so what I was having was an I/O (Incompetent / Operator) error then...the problem was between the monitor and the chair...I see...

Yes, after further testing (once I know what I was doing) I noticed that everything seems to be working quite nicely, including the shifting between mouse and keyboard as well as the icons....things are looking very good so far :-)

Hey, just thought I'd stop by to say this game looks great. I love the graphics style! I'm running XP w/ SP2 like the other guys, and the final demo worked fine for me. I just had two quick suggestions regarding the mouse/keyboard interface. It just feels a little awkward having to switch between the two modes. Perhaps if there was a way to use shortcut keys in keyboard mode for the same operations you can use with the mouse it would be easier. Or even have it so the arrow keys work in mouse mode. If you really want to keep the two separate, it would be nice to be able to switch back into mouse mode with a right click as well. The other thing was there was no way for me to back out of the quit button! You have to save and quit or not save and quit, but you can't just close the menu. Tongue That might make it a little easier.

It seems like you're running two separate input loops for the keyboard/mouse and choose which loop based on what mode you're in. If it'd be too much of a headache for you to fiddle with the keyboard/mouse suggestion, forget about it. ^_^

For me it's like a second nature but I have to think about this... If I can find another way to make both modes coexist, I'll let you know...

I will fix this shortly with a "are you sure you want to quit"...

Exactly, this is mainly why I made two separated modes...
