windoze saves its random seed in the registry, so it doesn't need to randomize based on the timer / clock, linux saves it to disk i think.

Yeah, it has a built-in clock. ;-) Since the 84 is just a "super-version" of the 83, the 83 probably uses timing (of some sort) too, though it doesn't show it.
