Linux itself doesn't have fonts. The X Window System, which most distros include, does have fonts, which, in my opinion, are really nice - except for those horribly long names with all the dashes in them.

Yeah... I use KDE, but I hate their fonts, cos they look crap on a 1024X768. And besides most of the default fonts are bitmapped.

All those dashes are to do with the character encoding (ISO-8859-1) etc. Yes they are annoying. Go find "webFonts.sh" for the fix.

Quote:99% of problems with windows are due to people running half-ass hardware with s**t drivers.

While that does cause a large amount of problems, most of the problems from the Win9x are due to the lack of kernel protection. The reason that poor drivers crash the system is because they are running in kernel mode, so if they die the kernel dies. Unfortunately, the Win9x team thought it was a clever idea to run just about everything in kernel mode (in the interests of speed) including the gui and Internet explorer. A crash in either can bring the system to its knees very quickly.

WinNT started with a clean slate and had a microkernel architecture so the gui and most other components ran in user space. The first WinNT was hideously slow, so once again Microsoft pushed large amounts of code into the kernel. Any bugs at kernel level can potentially cause a system crash and seeing as the latest WinNT kernels have roughly 30million lines of code in them (compared to about 1-2million for most commercial Unixes) theres a pretty good chance that something will eventually go wrong.

Hey UT2K3 is no classic UT but at least it is no Quake 3 Arena!
o, let me get this straight. You want to fly on a magic carpet to see the King of the Potato People and plead with him for your freedom, and you're telling me you are completely sane?! -A.J. Rimmer

UT2003 has its fine points. Ragdoll models are /very/ cool.

Anyone else seen the Doom3 macworld demo? That looks awesome, per-pixel lighting (all lighting is done in realtime), ragdoll physics on everything and bump-mapped models. Quake 4 is suposed to be released at around the same time running on the same engine (Doom3 = single player, Quake 4 = multiplayer).

I tried shooters.

But I just don't like them. They make me get way too excited.

Lol. I'm not huge into FPSes either. I beat Max Payne a few times, and I'm halfway through JK2 (play it in bursts)... but I'm not a CS junkie or anything.
