Another New Computer
#1
I'm finally getting a replacement for RADIUM-V.

It's an HP Pavillion from the late 90's, last I've seen it has 128mb, win98,at least a pentium 3, and other fun goodies. I get it because I'm setting up a friend's new computer, so my payment is the old one.

1. What should the new name be?

2. How should I upgrade it?

3. Should I keep the OS or go with Linux? Or go with both?

4. When I get inet, who wants to be a buddy?

IMHO, you should get rid of Win98. Microsoft's support for it is extremely slim. It's support for modern hardware is pretty bad too. I'm not saying you have to obviously (that's your choice), but I do recommend getting Linux. Perhaps Fedora or Gentoo would work for you.

As for the name, Tiny sounds nice and simple. :-)

I wouldn't recommend Gentoo for that. I've heard Slackware and Debian can run ok on old hardware.

4 gb isn't enough space to dual boot... I've never tried Linux on old hardware. I don't know if you'd have to avoid KDE/Gnome and use a minimal window manager. If it were me I'd just keep 98 on there.

I wouldn't recommend debian on a 4gb system...I used to have a dual boot system(ME, Debian) and debian ate up 10GB of my 20GB hard drive...You need a damn small version of Linux, or DOS w/ Win 3.1

I just installed Ubuntu on this computer today and it's taking 1.4G.
