i'm stuck in linux, might as well make the best of it
#1
you guys prolly all remember my questions about linux and that little story i gave, well.. my mobo has something wrong w/ it that wont let it boot of any hard drive, but it can read/write to a hard drive, and boot from cd... i know, it sounds strange, and it really, really sucks!

so, now i'm stuck using linux untill i get a new motherboard, i dont have a job right now, but i'm working on it.. so hopefully it'll be soon..

my idea is i'll make the best of things, and i've been thinking alot about it.. if i can figure out how to do everything i used to do in windows, i prolly wont need to go back to windows, i'll just stick to linux, but i doubt that...

another problem i have is that every time the power goes out, i loose everythign i've done, because my linux wont let me write to my hdd or my thumbdrive for some reason, and the power goes out very often! that kinda sux... but all things aside, i think the stretch between now, and the time i get my new board will be a learning experiance....

As I said before, you're better off getting a new or used computer, then popping in the old drive... But make sure the new hard drive comes first in the serial line, so that computer doesn't get trashed...

As far as I know, xteraco's comp is costum built.... A new mobo would be better off than replacing what's probally his work of art.... ....

If you can boot from a CD, you can use a boot loader on a CD (like Ultimate Boot CD) to force your computer to boot from a hard drive.

Are you sure you have the master/slave bridges on the back of the hdd(s) set correctly?

yep, the computer is completely custom built, by me of course... i did a diagnostic on the board, and found the problem to be in the chipset, its just an older board thats ready to retire... so i'm looking to buy a new motherboard

i did check the jumpers btw.. lol

i actually found a distro of linux that i really really like, i'm enjoying using it, and it does quite a bit.. its a live cd, with options to install to hdd of course.. its called SLAX, you can check it out at - slax.linux-live.org -

if i can get fruityloops, modplug, kdevlope, and xmplay to work w/ slax, i probably wont use windows anymore

KDevelop and xmplay will probably work just fine, but good luck on fruityloops and modplug. You'd be better off trying to get FastTracker II working...seriously.
