Yes, FB is indeed very powerful compared to anything BASIC has ever seen... as Mystik said, in a lot of aspects it rivals c... in some memory managemnt places in my progs i use c functions.. like memset, memcpy... and then its like... c speed. if youre a decent programmer you can work bottlenecks out of your code... doesn't matter the lang...

and FB is something your average Joe can pick up and use... but im telling you... you get into pointers and things like this... you can unleash the powers within :PP

Visual BASIC anyone? :-D

I think it was originally MS' solution to the limitations of QB. As we all know, VB grew and became the new BASIC dialect (there also were Blitz Basic, PowerBASIC, etc. as the years went by).

The final question:
Can FB become as great as VB? (Tip: Googlebomb :-))

Hell yeah....let us just look behind the scenes of the freebasic language:
1) The idea of freebasic, and any basic tbh, is pretty much summed up by its name, BASIC, learning how to code in it isn't going to give you a headache, its going to give you inspiration because you know you can do some neat stuff in it without killing yourself first

2) Qbasic is obviously a dying language, dos is slowly being replaced completely. Freebasic on the other hand can not only support win XP perfectly, but it can also support linux and dos. Any new quirks that MS throws into windows in the next several years, will be compensated for because FB+FBIDE+(any other IDE for FB) have very dedicated development teams.

3) Furthermore, FB is not only easy to learn, but its not hampered by its ease to master. It is quite powerful as various benchmarks have shown, and thus is a serious consideration for your latest and greatest project idea whether it be 3D, extremely caclulation intensive, or what have you.

4) Hell yeah again Big Grin

Seriously, the only thing FB lacks is the attention that it deserves.

In simple terms, it's a programmer who writes the code that controls the robots in an automated factory. They're actually alot of fun. Most of the GUI's are good old blue DOS screens, like QB. Wink

Don't compare FB to VB, they have different focuses.

But yeah, they both are good examples. BASIC ain't dying. Maybe MSDOSish QB is (or has for the most part), but BASIC as a language has still lotsa asses to beat Big Grin

People fail to distinguish between a language and a compiler. A language is an abstract thing. A compiler isn't. That only a few keep using MSDOS and QB doesn't mean a shit. QB was only a pretty limited BASIC compiler. That doesn't mean that BASIC is limited.

When I first heard of these programmable devices they were called Control Processors.

BASIC is and forever will be the best language to learn on. In fact, if compilers like FreeBasic keep being developed, it'll probably become one of the main languages to use for general windows programming. Think about it. Sure, it's not object oriented. But what if someone came up with a BASIC OOP language? Boy, that'll change worlds.

Hell Yah!

There's already an OOP BASIC...in fact, there's several, one of the weaker ones being Visual Basic itself.
