Depends on what you define as fast really. It also depends on what you want to do with your BASIC dialect.

For example, if you want to do applications and utilities tha are GUI based, Visual Basic is probably your best bet, it's has good speed at what it does and offers some very good tools to create these kinds of applications fast.

If however you want to do 3D programming using Open G.L. 2D Scrolling Games (and Paralax scrolling engines), Windows Console applications mostly, the FreeBasic is probably bettter suited for those tasks and faster than VB as far as 3D Open G.L. is concerned.

It also depends on if you want your creations to be multiplatform or not (DOS, Linux, Windows, etc...) Then FreeBasic wins hands down.

As far as RAW computing power is concerned, FreeBasic benefits from a C based runtime and the ability to use inline Assembler where speed is of utmost importance so FreeBasic probably easily rivals languages such as C/C++. GUI development tools are in the making (like a port of the EZ GUI system, wxWindows, GTK which offer some good GUI paradigms but designing your GUI will be more tedious in those than they would be in VisualBasic for example.

Hope this helps :-)
hen they say it can't be done, THAT's when they call me ;-).

In the numbers crunching department, FreeBASIC has the drop on Power Basic, long considered the most powerful BASIC in the world. Someone did a benchmark with 0.13 versus the latest version of Power Basic but I have no idea where the site went. Sad Regardless, FB came out on top in almost everything.

I would say FB because the code is so similar to QB, making it easier to migrate from QB to FB.
