MY FUCKING CRAP NEW PC
#11
Quote:yeah, since it seems like you got it as 'the package deal' or whatever, i'm sure they have something there to protect you, like a warranty.. etc. thats the difference in money you pay from like building it yourself ;p

Usually you're not paying for the service - you're paying for the "customization." For example, dell gets parts for super cheap, but whenever you customize a computer so they cannot assemble it w/ the other computers, it costs them more. That's why their base systems are such deals while they can be ripoffs especially in the higher price ranges ($1000+). Since manufacturers get parts wholesale and in bulk it is easy for them to offer support.
BTW - if you don't buy OEM parts for a computer they usually are under a warranty of a year or more (Seagate hard drives have like a 5 year warranty, for instance.)

The first thing to do with any new machine is deOEMize it. This means wiping the drive and installing a fresh copy of XP with stock drivers.

This will increase the speed and efficiency of your machine 600%. At least it does for Dells.

I've tried the recovery disk and stuff, nothing.

Apparently Windoes\System32\Config\System is missing or corrupt. System recovery brings it back in a missing or corrupt state.

I'm currently on hold to the help phone-line (have been for 25 minutes so far......) and hoping they can help.

What happens is I switch it on

It does the usual boot up stuff
It Crashes when it should log on to windows

AND now it

Does the usual boot up stuff
Goes to the 'not switched off correct screen' even though it switched itself off
Crashes when you try to do anything like start up normally, with last good config settings or in one of three safe modes...

Also the 'reinstall function' just goes to system recovery...

EDIT: After 30 mins they said they would send a person to fix it. I now have to wait 24 working hours for a phone call to arrange a date etc. for the person to come and fix it.

This actually could be a combination of problems. A crook motherboard can be an issue.

When the Pentium Pro was top of the line, my parents bought a P133, the next one down. Within 6 weeks it was back at Mitac in Melbourne getting a new motherboard. 3 months later it happened again. Twelve months old, it did it again. Seven or eight years down the track, it is in good working order, minus a monitor due to a broken pin...

The problems were the same, amongst others. It may not be software. Have you tried the CD on a different system? The drivers installed my not be the right ones, but if all goes well after hardware installation, XP should behave correctly. If not, then your CD is also faulty.

Software problems on a new computer is not surprising. I have seen many a HP and Compaq go looney once you turn it on. Only one hard drive is formatted and installed with Windows, they then take that hard drive and use it to mirror dozens of other hard drives, which are then stuck into the computer. Something's always bound to go wrong, it's not like they actually turn them on long enough for windows to run, but just to pass POST. It's quite cheap really...

On a different note Barok, if I paid good hard-earned money for a computer, or for any product, it better work or I'm complaining. As for installing other programs, tech support loves to blame the customer of breaking their own computer in order to get around having to service the computer. It's a very common and cheap trick in the computer industry. Phone support is cheap because it's usually outsourced to India where they pay people like $20 a week. But the tech that goes to your house gets that an hour, thus they try to avoid sending the tech out.

BTW barok, love the sig Wink
