p could be 6n +1 or 6n - 1. For example, if n = 5, p would be 31 or 29.

It's used when you're dealing with quadratics or higher order functions.

if x ^ 2 = 25, then x could be 5 or -5, right, since -5 squared is still positive 25?

That's when you use the funny symbol.
