General programming ....

Quote:Hmm, perhaps.

Why not make a filter-forum add-on for people? :-O That would be interesting..

Anyway..

Can you change the wording of the general forum to make it "mainly for non-QB/FB issues", or "general programming/nonQB-FB issues", or something like that.

Maybe a post Icon mod would be helpful for people to just use a filter and find the posts they'd like to answer.

Actually I really like the post icon idea. If someone could create some along the same style as these: [Image: 16775-r.gif] [Image: 16776-r.gif] [Image: 16777-r.gif], I would add the icons in and work with the mod idea.

IMHO the 16 subforums are already too many. It takes forever to scan through each of these to see if there's anything that I want to reply to.

For example: Do we really need Newbie Help, QB Programming Help, QB Projects, QB in General, and basically the same for Freebasic? The posts in these 8 subforums are really not categorized according to the subforum name.

People tend to post wherever they like. Newbies with questions don't restrict themselves to Newbie Help. Some Newbies will duplicate the post in several subforums to make sure they get attention. Some people will reply with FB code to questions asked in the QB subforums.

The more subforums we have the more these problems are compounded. You just can't pidgeon-hole people.

Take a look at PetesQBsite. There's only 4 subforums in total and these cover all the required topics.

Quote:I would like to ask questions that are FB related, but since FB is similar to QB, and the FB questions are often related to newer features, there just isn't a forum for general BASIC issues.

Um..... ?

Who cares? In the Basic BASIC they are the same.... If the Question is soo much like QB,. heh,. you could post in either FB Help or QB Help... it wouldn't matter much at all... You'd get the same help... ..

Tho staying in the forum for the compiler would probably be nicer.. Cut's down on that QB vs FB stuff..

The thing I consider *important* (we had this debate a while ago) is the diferentiation between "newbie help" and "help". If a newbie asks me how to print text to the screen, I point to the PRINT manual page and explain the doubts the poster may have after reading it. If a non-newbie asks the same I assume that he wants something more sophisticated and the answer covers deeper and harder (whoah, that sounded very bad! Big Grin) replies, with more techy/advanced stuff.

But hell yeah, I think there are way too many forums here Tongue

I'd rather mix QB and FB and ask people in the rules (which they never read) to specify whether they are using QB or FB.

I know some of you said you didn't like post icons, but if they were designed/customized for the forum, they would be a help. Such as if we combined some forums, it would help someone differentiate between what's being talked about and allow less forums to be here.

Say we had a qb and a fb icon.

Also, I added them to fbtk, just to play around, so you can go here http://fbtk.net/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=2 and see a forum with a lot of posts using the icons. If we could get a set of about 20 icons, I think it would be helpful and allow the merging of a few of the less posted in forums so they don't appear to be so dead and allow people to check posts better.

I'm leaving this up to you guys.

I think that, as long as they are informative and not annoying, I'm fine with them. FB and QB icons are a must. We could add a BASIC for other basics out there, but nothing stops us for specifying VB or VBNET also...

We shoud beware, anyway, 'cause the more features you add, the more prone the forum is to be misused Tongue

If you're talking about fb and qb post icons,
Does that mean you're....

merging some of the forums?!

That's what we are debating here, precisely. For example, I think there are way too many subforums. On an common day, how many posts are in each of the programming subforums, in average? two?

Many times, a QB or fB question and subsequent replies are valid for both fB and QB, specially in the newbies section. Having a BASIC help, BASIC newbies help, BASIC projects and BASIC in general is enough, IMHO. Then label the threads with QB, fB, VB, Other or General.
