Actually, if he had a gun he could have just drawn it and the crook probably would have left. The butterfly would have both its wings and the spider may even think twice before messing with another butterfly. Don't bother telling me that a gun might have provoked the criminal into attacking because you and I both know that's not true. He clearly didn't want to hurt anyone.

You dont really know that. I think if you were to have a gun in that situation you need to either shoot the robber instantly, or not pull the gun at all. The robber does not know if you will shoot or not, so may pull his own trigger in 'self-defence'

Ya, and he'll come back with his own gun, so you get an automatic rifle, then he comes back with an automatic, then you hire guards, so the robbers team up and arm themselves more..

SJ did everything right by treating the robber as a customer smiling and being welcoming.
I'm absolutely sure that SJ's boss would prefer loosing money, over having his store closed because of a murder, either SJ or the robber being the dead.
Not to mention the emotional pain of someone you know getting killed. (Assuming here that SJ's boss actually know SJ exist, which it's obvious he does from SJ's story)

Across a counter a knife is probably just as effective as a gun, a single swipe at less than arms length could tear a throat open. You would also need to get the gun out without alerting him to what you were doing, or again he would have the upper hand with the lesser weapon.

IMHO, the situation went about as well as it could: Nobody got hurt, nobody is going to be out for revenge, the worst that happened was a little money was stolen. SJ was able to give a statement about it to the police, so hopefully the guy can be picked up by the proper authorities.
