Here isnt even 20 new topics a day, so no use in having 20 forums.

The icon w/text you posted looks fine to me. Easily made out by the letters on the right, and for those - I won't mention any names - who need pictures because they can't read, the nice horse logo to the left.

I think it's a good compromise between the two camps, and I would see no better option other than having an actual choice - somewhere in the Profile perhaps - over which icon is to be displayed (the picture, the text or both). That way everybody has a chance to be happy. Flame on.

Removing the sticky/announcement icon would also remove the new post indicator making it harder to tell which topics have had new responses.
