Oblivion
#11
Yeah, the conversation minigame takes some skill, I pretty much have it mastered Big Grin. Having a couple thousand for bribe money helps though, lol. As far as I am concerned Oblivion's atmosphere beats hl2 hands down, but the character realism is definitely behind it. After hl2, the lip-synching in oblivion just fails to be satisfying. However, the fact I can actually TALK makes up for it .

I have progressed the main quest to the point where there are oblivion gates outside every city, so far I have closed 4 total, it almost gets monotonous. However, I think it really depends on what class you picked. As a knight, I have no problem closing the gates. As a theif I die frequently and can barely manage it with frequent quicksaves. Damn, the bell just rang I will write more when I get home, lol....

edit: As I was saying, I think the fact that I can experience the world in my own way at my own pace makes it so much more realistic than HL2 which is 100% linear. Knowing that you are seeing things the exact same way the developer intended in the way he intended does not lead to a suspension of disbelief. Having a huge world to travel at your leisure in whatever way you see fit doing whatever you feel is right to do is a huge part of the immersion factor. In reality you don't have a single linear (physical) path that you have to follow, and technically not even a figurative one, even though it might seem like it at times.

One of the worst things I noticed about the speech however was how on one of the beggars his voice kept changing between different tones (and maybe even actors for all I know!). This was a definite wtf moment. Not much more to say, its time to play. Tongue

What oblivion really is:
1) random crashes
2) random freezes
3) inability to run at an acceptable speed on most system
4) major bugs with the "red needle" on the compas
5) many players are forced to find third party, fan-made, patches to even make it work on their ancient systems, such as 3400+ 1GB RAM
6) no patches will ever be released, bethesda doesent make patches, ever
7) bethesda bans users that complain and point out major flaws in the game, from the official forum
8) the minimum system requirements were raised. AFTER the game was released and hundreds of thousands (some say millions) of pre-order copies were sold. effectively making half of those who ordered the game order it for no use (FX cards no longer supported, box state they are)

That about covers it..

All in all, im not impressed with this piece of crap..
Turns out to be yet another overhyped piece of crap from bethesda.. much like call of cthulhu.. which, conincidentaly, also sucked big time.

My computer is above the recomended specs on the box and the site.
I had to find patches made by "fans" to even get the game to start without freezing, or just crashing.
When working, i have no shaders, textures reduced to lowest.. and pretty much everything else reduced to less than lowest..
I get about 10 FPS, which randomly, without reason drop to 0 fps for a few seconds, unrelated to whats going on..

It's this kind of STABILITY and USER CARE that puts bethesda softwares above the rest.. really.. god damn piece of crap..

I'll be returning my copy later today

Hrm...I downloaded one of the prequels, Daggerfall, and have not been impressed so far. If it's any indication of how the series plays, then I think I'll pass on this one as well. Besides, I don't have the latest generation supercomputer to run the game anyways...

The series isn't for everyone. Daggerfall was very buggy, yes, but I personally enjoyed it quite a bit... I think it was the largest of the games so far, seeing the world map literally peppered with grey pixels representing cities, without even showing dungeons or taverns or whatnot... I dunno. Consider how much effort goes into making such an insanely massive game, I for one don't expect it to be even remotely bug-free. Tongue
And personally I've never really heard of half the things Z!re mentioned... Ah well. I, for one, enjoy the game. I'm not a huge fan, but I definately find it rather enjoyable.

z!re, if you want to play a next gen game, you have to have a next gen system, thats just how it works. Other than the crashes, which are not even that frequent (in over 30 hours of play, I would guess 6 crashes at most, some of those just being crashes when I was trying to exit anyway) I did not have a single problem that you did. But I suppose Josiah is right, its not for everyone.

ONE crash is too many for me...now I KNOW I wouldn't like the game.

The only time it's crashed for me is when I quit.

Answer to all those questions... you should have got an xbox 360

xD

No compatibility problems, its man enough to play it with the gfx on full, and doesnt freeze.

(ya ya, I know, its no excuse.. or whatever)

Well ok, the 360 is known to freeze on occasion. But thats only happened to me about 4 times the entire time Ive had it :)

No. Well, yes. But the reason for some of the flaws in the PC version (like the simply ABYSMAL draw distance on small foliage/weeds/grass) is because they were developing it for both PC and xbox 360 at the same time. You know, I'm really beginning to hate that damn console and its predecessor. Tongue Same problem with Thief 3 (which aside from these complaints was an excellent experience), the loading zones and other limitations (no water.........) was because they were developing it for PC and xbox. Pisses me off. They could do the PC version first and strip it down for the console, but no...

Yeah, I would admit some games have been crippled because of console development, but are you sure about that being the case for the 360?
It is faster than pretty much all of the current mainstream computers, has sufficient RAM and a blistering GPU as well. I dont see how developing for it could make a game worse for the PC (apart from lazy developers not porting good control styles to take advantage of keyboard/mouse etc)
